  • I love this phrase by @sirdavidattenborough In order for us to protect our environment we first must learn to love it and appreciate it. Once we do that, then we can learn to protect it. How can we protect it? By making small changes that will have a collectively big impact. Growing your own vegetables for example, will reduce food miles, which means less fuel will be needed to transport food across countries, therefore less air pollution. Growing your own veg also means less use of chemicals and fertilisers - which in turn keeps the soil healthy and pollutant free.   • Tulip bulb planting season is now. What are your plans for Sunday? I'm planning to plant my next lot of tulip bulbs. If you have picked up a pack of tulip bulbs and want to know more about how to plant them, then head over to my site for a complete tulip planting guide. There are a few basic principles that you should follow: 1. Tulips bulbs should be planted in the fall/autumn season. Right now is the perfect time to get them in the ground. Plant them before the first frost sets in. 2. Look for a sunny spot in your garden as tulips love the sun. 3. Dig a hole about 10-15cm deep. 4. Place the bulb in the hole, with the pointy side facing upwards and then cover the hole. 5. Sow each bulb around 10-15cm apart. 6. Water the bulbs if you don't receive any rainfall. That's it!   • As the summer period comes to an end, so is the supply of fresh homegrown vegetables. Fortunately the Apache chilli pepper plant is continuing to fruit. I bought this plant when it was about 3 inches tall. The plant is starting to produce fresh red chillies. All surplus vegetables such as, #chillies #tomatoes and #garlic will be washed and frozen so I can use them over the coming months.   • Homegrown Apache chilli pepper. I bought this plant when it was about 3 inches tall. I haven't had much luck growing chillies outside, so this plant was kept indoors. I pollinated the flowers using the same electric toothbrush trick as I did with the tomatoes. Happy to say that the plant has already provided me with a steady supply of fresh chillies since last month. The Apache chilli is mild in flavour. It has a peppery taste with a subtle heat. I add mine to curries and also roast them whole to have with BBQ meats.
