- Cannot believe I made a mistake in the report
- I haven’t changed the bed sheets
Tip 1: Start a List to Help You Sleep Well
Have you ever got in bed and started to worry about what you have to do in the morning? The above are examples of how thoughts make us toss and turn during the first few hours of our sleep. This results in you feeling tired and rushed – not the best start to the day.
I was a worrier. I spent hours tossing and turning because I was thinking about all the things that need to be done in the morning. It meant that I thought about all the things that stressed me out during the day and spent the night looking for solutions.
Not only did this keep me up, I felt tired, run down and agitated the next day.
Worry Less and Sleep More
One day it just dawned on me, by worrying during the night, I was not solving my problem. If anything, I was adding more tiredness to the next day. There was nothing I can do while trying to sleep! So why am I spending so much time thinking about issues I cannot do anything about?
The main reason I struggled to sleep was because I believed that thinking about the problem would help me remember it in the morning. If I did not think about the worry, then I would forget about it; which would be worse than thinking about it all night long!
And that is when it hit me, I was creating my own sleep problems. I therefore, decided to take action and decided to make a list of ‘to do worries’ 30 minutes before going to bed. This way, the ‘to do list of worries’ was still there when I woke up, but it meant that I was starting to sleep better.
It took me a few weeks to adjust to this new routine. Now, several years down the road, I sleep like a baby. Once my head hits the pillow, I am out within a half hour.
Since I stopped thinking and trying to solve problems in my sleep, I wake up feeling refreshed and energetic. I tackle the list as soon as I wake up and then get on with the rest of my day.

Tip 3: Keep up with Fresh Bedding

A weekly vacuum and polish routine will make the room cleaner and easier to maintain if you keep on top of it. I made a homemade polish using organic coconut oil and an essential oil to wipe down wooden furniture including window frames.
At the moment, I’m using tea tree oil to give the room an aromatic natural scent. Simply take one table spoon of organic coconut oil and about 3 drops of an essential oil. Mix it well and then use a clean cloth to wipe all wooden surfaces.
Take the guilt out of sleeping. If you wake up a 5am every morning, but you oversleep by a couple of hours one weekend, lay in bed without the guilt. Your body probably needed the extra time to recoup. Allow your mind to accept that it is OK to have slept in.
