My mom used these recipes on my hair when I was growing up.  I have curly hair that I straighten on a regular basis.  However, using coconut oil on my hair has reduced the damage over the years. 

I have used coconut oil on my hair as a deep conditioning treatment for many years. My hair is still shiny, soft and healthy.  I continue to use coconut oil on my hair, as well as, on my daughter’s hair.

Coconut oil works like a natural conditioner in the hair.  Therefore, the nourishing coconut oil for hair recipes will condition, soften, shine, nourish and strengthen hair in the short, as well as, long term. 

Most of the ingredients will be available in your kitchen pantry or bathroom cupboard.  Give these easy and cheap coconut oil for hair treatment recipes a chance to naturally improve and condition your hair.

Nourishing Coconut Oil Recipes for Hair Treatment

Coconut oil for hair as an overnight conditioner 

  • 2 tablespoons warm organic coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, castor oil or avocado oil

Coconut oil with olive, castor or avocado oil works well if left overnight.  The oils will support healthy growth, as well as, strengthen the hair.

Coconut oil recipe as a cooling conditioner

  • 2 tablespoons warm organic coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel

Aloe vera has many beneficial properties, therefore if you have an aloe plant, squeeze a tablespoon worth of aloe gel out.  Mix the gel with warm coconut oil and apply whilst it is still warm.

Coconut oil as a hair mask – day conditioner

  • 2 tablespoons warm organic coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2-4 drops essential oil that is suitable for the skin, such as, peppermint oil, orange oil or tomato seed oil

Recipes with an essential oil should ideally be washed out on the same day.  Therefore, leave the oil in your hair for a couple of hours and then wash it out.

Coconut oil as a hair mask – day conditioner

  • 2 tablespoons warm organic coconut oil
  • ½ overripe mashed avocado

For maximum benefits, it is best to eat the avocado.  This will give you the nutrients internally, which will work their magic externally.  However, if you have an avocado that is going bad, rather than throwing it away, you might as well use it to condition your hair.

Leave the mashed avocado and coconut oil in your hair for about an hour or two, then wash it out. 

How to use coconut oil for hair damage

Step one: Prepare the nourishing coconut oil hair serum using a recipe from above.

Step two: Brush your hair to detangle and remove loose hair first. 

Step three: Gently massage the scalp with your fingertips. Massage your scalp for about 5 minutes to improve blood circulation.

Step four:  Using a bottle with a nozzle or an eyedropper, randomly place a 2 to 3 drops of the coconut oil for hair recipe on your scalp.

Step five:  Gently massage the coconut oil on your scalp with your fingertips.  The skin will immediately absorb the oil if it is dry.  Therefore, add couple of more drops where you need it.  Massage your scalp for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

Step six:  If you want to use the coconut oil as an overnight hair mask, repeat the steps using  5 to 10 drops of the coconut oil in the palm of your hands and mask the tips of your hair.  Then mask the rest of your hair.

Step seven: Comb it out and leave it overnight. 

Step eight:  Wash your hair as normal using any suitable hair shampoo and conditioner.  However, as coconut oil will make your hair oily, it will need to be washed twice so as not to leave an oily residue.

Please note, coconut hair oil tends to be sticky.  To prevent your pillow from becoming oily, place a hand towel over the pillow when going to bed.  Alternatively, massage the coconut oil in your hair in the morning and wash it out at the end of the day.

Will coconut oil work on my hair?

Some say coconut hair oil works miraculously as a natural hair conditioner, then there are others who say it does the opposite.  I can only give you an indication of how well coconut oil has worked on my hair. 

Organic coconut oil and all of the ingredients mentioned above are natural products with no chemicals, therefore, rather than confusing yourself with all the contradictory articles on the internet, give it a go.

Tip: Apply Coconut Oil to Boost Shine or Control Frizz

If your hair suffers from a non vibrant look, apply a tiny amount of coconut oil to boost shine and control frizz.  All you need is one or two drops.  Lightly apply it across your hair.  Too much will give it an oily look, so use it sparingly.
