How To Make An Avocado Face Mask

How to make an avocado face mask recipe.  Avocadoes are a super fruit with lots of health benefits.   Therefore, avocadoes have become a popular fruit in the beauty industry.

Not only can you buy shampoos containing avocado oil, you can also purchase pricey moisturisers and face masks made from fresh avocadoes.

For example, a 100g tub of Kiehl’s avocado nourishing hydration mask can cost you up to £36.  On the other hand, a homemade avocado hydrating mask made with the uneaten fruit can cost you less than £2.

Why You Should Make Your Own Avocado Face Mask at Home

Avocadoes have a high environmental impact.  Most of the avocadoes sold in our supermarkets come from South America.

The carbon footprint of an avocado, for example, is more than a bunch of bananas.  By the time they have made it to our kitchen, a pack of 2 avocadoes have emitted over 800kg of CO2 (source: weforum).

Therefore, before you decide to throw away the uneaten avocado, think about what else you can make with it. Preparing a homemade avocado face mask with other natural ingredients is one example of using the fruit.

Below are recipe examples for using the avocado to look after your skin.

You can read more about their environmental impacts at the bottom of this post.

DIY Avocado Face Mask

The best way to gain the health benefits of an avocado is by eating it. However, if you do not end up eating it, use it to make a frugal and natural skincare product.

An avocado has a high carbon footprint and it is also an expensive fruit to buy.

Therefore, the next time you have an avocado that you never got around to eating, turn it into an avocado face mask and reap the benefits on your skin.

The avocado oil and creamy texture of the fruit is ideal as a winter face mask, but equally good during the summer months.

Below are a few avocado face mask recipes that you can make at home using the uneaten fruit.

As long as your skin is not sensitive or allergic to any of the ingredients, you should try making your own avocado face masks at home.  If it is, then you should avoid these ingredients and substitute with suitable ones.

Homemade Avocado Face Mask Recipes

Below are a few simple face mask recipes with avocado that you can make at home.  The recipes below do not need many ingredients and take less than 10 minutes to prepare.

All you need to do is pick one recipe from below, combine the ingredients in a bowl and mash until you get a creamy texture.

Tip:  Use an avocado that is overripe because it is easier to mash for a creamy texture.

Avocado and Turmeric Face Mask Recipe

3 tablespoons overripe avocado

¼ teaspoon turmeric

Avocado and Yogurt Face Mask

1 tablespoon natural Greek yogurt

2 tablespoons overripe avocado

Avocado and Oatmeal Face Mask as a Scrub

3 tablespoons overripe avocado

½ teaspoon cane sugar

½ teaspoon oatmeal

Avocado and Honey Face Mask

3 tablespoons overripe avocado

½ teaspoon organic honey

½ teaspoon flour (to make it pasty)

How to Apply Your DIY Avocado Face Mask

Wash your face with warm water before you apply the mask.  Then, using your fingertips, apply the mask on your face.   Gently massage it for about 30 seconds.

To reap the benefits of the avocado face mask, leave it on your face for 15 minutes before washing it.

Avocado and Cucumber Ice Mask

A fresh avocado is packed with vitamin E and healthy oils that our skin loves. Cucumbers have hydrating and cooling properties and this is why they are often used in homemade skincare products.

Therefore, you can prepare a cooling face mask using avocado and cucumber.  In this recipe the idea is to prepare an avocado ice mask that will soothe your skin when it feels dehydrated and dry.

Avocado and Cucumber Ice Mask

1 overripe avocado

3 tablespoons chopped cucumber

5 drops of a relaxing essential oil

  1. Combine the avocado and cucumber in a food processor and blend until smooth.
  2. Transfer to a bowl and add an essential oil of your choice. Use an essential oil that is good for relaxation such as ylang ylang or a sweet scented one such as rose geranium. Give it a good mix.
  3. Transfer the avocado and cucumber ice mask in small cupcake molds.  Put about 1 tablespoon in each mold.
  4. Cover, and freeze until fully hardened.

How to store the cooling cucumber and avocado ice mask

The homemade cooling cucumber and avocado ice mask should last at least a month in the freezer.  Place the newly created molds in an airtight container and use as needed.

When you are ready to use, take one block out and gently warm it in the palm of your hands.  Once the surface of the ice mask becomes soft, massage it on your face.

The ice will slowly melt as you continue to massage it.  This is a great avocado face mask for the Summer.  Its cooling nature will make your skin feel refreshed and smooth.

Leave the melted mask on your face for at least 10 minutes. Then rinse it off.

The cucumber and avocado ice mask molds should be stored in the freezer in an airtight container. They will last for up to a month.

Environmental Impact of an Avocado & How To Reduce It

  1. Avocadoes travel thousands of miles to get to our supermarkets, therefore they have a high carbon footprint.
  2. Avocadoes are water intensive and farmed in plantations that take up a lot of land.  As a result, they are contributing to the current loss of biodiversity that we are experiencing around popularity of large plantations.
  3. As previously stated, the carbon footprint of an avocado is high, therefore, do not let its food miles and farming intensities go waste.
  4. To learn more about an avocado’s carbon foot print and environmental impact visit the World Economic Forum which really delves into the environmental impacts of intensive agricultural methods used to supply the ever growing demand of avocadoes.
  5. You can reduce your environmental impact by eating what you buy. If you cannot eat it, buy less.  However, if you still have one that you did not eat, use it to nourish your skin.
  6. Lower your overall environmental impact by making your own homemade skincare face masks using uneaten avocadoes. This will reduce packaging waste and food waste.
  7. The benefit to natural homemade beauty products is that they are chemical free and you can prepare them whenever you need them.  The ingredients are readily available in the kitchen, therefore, the amount of waste from unused shop bought products will also drop drastically.
