Eco Friendly Halal Sunscreen – How to Find the Right Sunscreen

Searching for an eco friendly, halal sunscreen? Whether you are sunbathing in the garden, planning an exotic holiday, performing Hajj or travelling for Umrah, applying sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the Sun; which can cause skin cancer.  However, finding a sunscreen that is plant based as well as alcohol free can be a time consuming exercise. This is something that I found when I was shopping for a suitable sunscreen.  Therefore, to help you find an eco friendly, halal sunscreen, I have done initial research on brands that are readily available to buy on Amazon and also fairly priced.

Listed below are some brands you should consider when shopping around for sunscreen that is environmentally friendly, as well as, halal.  Amazon is a good place to start your search because it is a marketplace, which supports smaller brands needing to reach out to more customers.

Which SPF factor to Choose?

Choosing the right SPF factor is a personal choice, therefore, you should always go for the factor that is most suitable to your skin.  There are numerous posts written by medical experts who suggest the right factor, however, on average the SPF factor should be 30 or above.  Make sure the sunscreen works for UVA and UVB rays.

Are all Sunscreens Environmentally Safe?

Not all sunscreens are environmentally safe to use. Some products contain ingredients that are harmful to marine life. As a result, when these ingredients enter the ocean whilst we are swimming, they pollute the water and cause damage to coral reefs. This in turn threatens the livelihood of many fish species.

In a previous post, sustainable beauty brands, I mentioned that not all natural brands will be 100% eco friendly.  Therefore, when you are looking for an eco friendly product, look for those that meet your personal requirements. For example, if you are planning a beach holiday, look for an eco-friendly sunscreen that is reef or ocean safe.

What Makes a Sunscreen Halal as well as Eco Friendly?

Most products will display certifications on their website or on the product packaging.  On the other hand, others do not advertise these certifications, especially if they are halal accreditation, so you have to research their ingredient list, which makes it a time consuming exercise. For me personally, I ask myself certain questions to make the judgement about its sustainability.  These are the same questions I ask when I am looking for skincare and makeup brands. In order for me to class it as halal, it must be plant based and it should not contain alcohol.

On the other hand, for it to be classed as eco friendly, the product must contain natural plant based ingredients, which are ideally organic and come from sustainable farming practices. The packaging should also be recyclable.  With regards to sunscreen, I also look for an ocean or reef friendly brand.  Looking for a reef friendly product is particularly important when you are planning a beach holiday.  Sunscreen ingredients have been known to kill marine life, especially coral reefs when they enter the ocean.  Therefore, ensure that the product you end up buying is safe for the ocean.

  2. Is it vegan/plant based?
  3. Are ingredients from sustainable plantations/farms?
  4. Does it have a cruelty-free certification?
  5. Is it reef/ocean friendly?

Halal and Eco Friendly Sunscreen Options

Whilst I have researched the sunscreen options that are available in the UK and US, you should look into your local Amazon marketplace for availability.  Most products are purchasable in more than just the country of manufacture; this is one big advantage of Amazon. Amazon is used by hundreds of small businesses, offering bespoke products, such as the ones listed below.  These brands cater for families, therefore you should find SPF and protection levels suitable for adults and children.

Green People

  1. Does the brand or product use natural, organic and/or ethically sourced ingredients? YES – The sunscreens are certified as organic.  However, each sunscreen product has differing amounts of organic ingredients; therefore look out for the percentage of ingredients on the product.
  2. Is it vegan/plant based? YES
  3. Are ingredients from sustainable plantations/farms? YES – Packaging is plant based, made from sugarcane sourced from sustainable farmlands
  4. Does it have cruelty-free certification? YES
  5. Is it reef/ocean friendly? YES
  6. Can I recycle or reuse the packaging – low waste/recyclable packaging? Depends on your local recycling centre – Check if plant based packaging can be recycled in your area.
  7. Is it alcohol free?  YES

The plus point: The brand is plant based and alcohol free, therefore making all Green People sunscreens as suitable contenders of natural, halal sunscreens.  In addition, Green People donate 30p to the Marine Conservation Society for every bottle we purchase.

  1. Does the brand or product use natural, organic and/or ethically sourced ingredients? YES – Most of the ingredients are natural and organic, although they do not have an organic certification at the moment.
  2. Is it vegan/plant based? NO – Although some products contain caranauba wax, majority are made with beeswax.  Check the label carefully before you purchase the preferred product.
  3. Are ingredients from sustainable plantations/farms? The website states that some ingredients are sourced from Fair Trade farms, such as organic Aloe Vera.
  4. Does it have Cruelty-free certification? YES
  5. Is it reef/ocean friendly? YES
  6. Can I recycle or reuse the packaging – low waste/recyclable packaging? Depends – The website does not mention if the packaging is recyclable.  If you decide to purchase the product and it comes in a plastic tube or bottle, check if there is a recycling symbol with the numbers 1, 2, 3 4, 5, or 6.  If it does, then you should be ok to recycle it.  This again will depend on your local recycling services.
  7. Is it alcohol free?  Some products are alcohol free, but not all. I have listed below the products that are free of alcohol.

Information on the Badger sunscreen website is very confusing to follow.  It is not easy to find the answers to the above questions. You have to read through every product ingredient before finding the right one.  The options below are suitable halal sunscreen options because they are alcohol free and primarily plant based.  The only non-plant material they contain is beeswax.
