Recipes for Essential Oil DIY Aromatherapy Products

How to make essential oil DIY homemade aromatherapy recipes. I am completely in love with essential oils.  I use them to scent the home, add them to face toners and make essential oil DIY diffusers for a good night sleep.  However, I realised that I was not using them to their full potential.

Which is a shame because aromatherapy essential oils cost a lot of money.  So lately, I have been exploring creative ways to make essential oil DIY homemade products for daily use.

If you are looking for inspiration, Pinterest and Instagram, are filled with creative ideas of how to make essential oil DIY projects.

However, the sheer volume of ideas can make it confusing when you scroll around looking for inspiration.

Therefore, to simplify what you can do with essential oils, below are ideas of essential oil DIY recipes you can make with everyday home ingredients.

Environmental and Financial Benefits of Essential Oil DIY Projects

  1. Making your own essential oil DIY products at home will reduce the amount of packaging waste that you produce.
  2. The homemade products will cost you pennies to make.  If you decide to purchase a bath melt from Lush for example, it will set you back at least £3 per melt.  At home you can probably make a whole batch for £3.
  3. You can also rest assured that your homemade natural essential oil DIY products are free of harsh chemicals.

Essential Oil DIY Sensory playdough

Sensory playdough made with essential oils is slowly gaining popularity.  We all know how stressful everyday life has become.

Small businesses have realised that there is a market for essential oil DIY playdough.  They are therefore successfully selling aromatherapy playdough on social media platforms for children, as well as, adults to use.

However, making essential oil DIY playdough at home is not very complicated.  Therefore, why not make your own homemade aromatherapy playdough using essential oils to relax and keep calm?

You can also get the kids involved in making and then using the homemade natural playdough.

You will need:

  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 3 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1.5 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 2 drops food colouring such as purple for lavender, green for peppermint, pink for geranium etc
  • 10-15 drops essential oils such as doTERRA lavender oil, eucalyptus, peppermint or geranium
Lavender Essential Oil

How to make your sensory playdough with essential oil

1:  In a saucepan add the flour, salt and cream of tartar. Mix it all together.

2:  Add water and coconut oil. Stir it well

3: Then turn your stove burner onto low and stir the mixture.

4:  Add the 2 drops of food colouring and keep stirring.

5:  Turn up the heat and keep stirring so that the mixture does not stick to the saucepan.  The mixture will start to thicken like dough.  It should not take more than 2 to 3 minutes for the playdough to form.  You will know it is ready when the dough comes away from the sides of the pan and is no longer moist.

6:  Remove the playdough from the pan and place it on a piece of waxed paper to cool.

7:  Add the essential oil once the dough has cooled down. Then knead the dough to mix the oils throughout the playdough.

8:  Store the aromatherapy playdough in an airtight container.

To make playdough with multiple essential oils, repeat the recipe to make as many aromatherapy sensory playdough types as needed.

Face Toners

Face mists or toners are a great way to enhance natural face cleansing routines. Below are ideas that use everyday home products to create single use natural face toners within seconds.

Making these at home reduces packaging waste and helps you move towards natural, plant based skincare routines that will cost pennies.

Coconut water and wild orange toner – add 1 drop of essential oil sweet orange to 5 tablespoons of coconut water.

Tea toner – Seep chamomile or green tea. Remove the tea leaves and then add 1 drop of tea tree oil to the liquid.

Rice water and rose toner – the next time you are cooking rice do not throw away the rice when rinsing it. Take approximately 5 tablespoons of the starchy water and add 2 drops of rose otto essential oil which is good for fine lines and wrinkles.

Hydrating toner – take 5 tablespoons of kettle water, allow it to cool down, then simply add 1 drop of neroli essential oil to the water.

Use a small spray bottle or bamboo face pad to apply all over your face.  Since these are homemade fact mists, which use everyday ingredients, your face may feel sticky.  Therefore, leave the toner for at least an hour, then splash warm water on your face to remove the stickiness.

Essential Oil DIY Natural Lip Balms

Did you know you can use essential oils to make DIY lip balm as a natural and chemical free alternative to store bought lip balms?  We are all prone to lick our lips as the day goes by, therefore, when using an essential oil for DIY lip balms, look for an essential oil that is food grade.

You will need:

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 4 tablespoons beeswax
  • 5 drops food grade essential oil
  • Small tin can

Microwave coconut oil and beeswax in a small bowl. Allow mixture to cool down without hardening, then add the essential oil.  Gently stir and pour into the tin.  Let it set.

Luxury Bath Melts

One of my favourite essential oil DIY homemade recipes is making my own luxury bath or shower melts.  I like making them because it is an activity I can do with my daughter.  Making luxury bath melts with essential oil takes less than 30 minutes and it is a great way to get young children involved in a creative activity.

You will need:

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ½ cup cocoa butter
  • 10 drops essential oil such as sweet almond oil, sweet orange oil, neroli oil, lavender oil or geranium oil
  • 2 drops food colouring (optional)
  • Silicone mold

How to make the luxury bath melts

1: Gently melt the cocoa butter in a bowl.

2: Add the baking soda to the bowl.

3: Add your food colouring and essential oi when the butter is luke warm. Keep mixing the paste.

4: Place the mixture into the silicone mold tray and allow it to harden in the fridge.

5: The bath melts should be ready to use in about an hour.

6: Place them in the fridge in an air tight container.  The essential oil DIY bath melts should last a couple of months.

The cocoa butter in the bath melts could make your shower or bathtub slippery, therefore exercise caution when using them.

Tip: If you do not have cocoa butter, try the recipe using coconut oil. However, coconut oil does melt very quickly at room temperature. Keep them refrigerated and only take them out before you shower or take a bath.

Body Scrubs Using Sugar and Essential Oil

My final suggestion for an essential oil DIY homemade beauty product is making your own body scrubs using sugar and an essential oil.  Creamy homemade sugar scrub recipes can moisturise and exfoliate your skin for literally pennies.

Preparing your own essential oil DIY homemade products will save you hundreds of pounds every year.  There are virtually hundreds of recipes available on the internet nowadays.  So you will never get bored of making your own essential oil DIY beauty products.

As I have mentioned in my previous posts, the benefit to natural homemade beauty products is that they are chemical free and you can prepare them whenever you need them.

The ingredients are readily available in the kitchen, therefore, the amount of waste from unused shop bought products will also drop drastically.

However, if making your own natural essential oil DIY beauty products is too much hard work, then there is always the option of buying them locally. There are many small businesses, as per the Instagram images, who would benefit from your purchase.

Support them by purchasing their beautiful creations and keep the economy going no matter where in the world you are, they need your support.

They too use natural ingredients and reduce packaging waste in their creations. So why not, give small business owners a chance to thrive?
