WHY I AM SUPPORTING THE UN’s SDGs

I am writing this blog, ‘why I am supporting the UN’s SDGs’ to raise awareness of the sustainable development goals within the business community.

This month I celebrated six months since the start of my blog, Smart Money Green Planet. When I first started, I did not know what would happen. I was not sure if I would continue with blogging.  I did not know if anyone would read it, but I have been pleasantly surprised.  Individuals globally are engaging with me over the content of the blog.  Thanks to social media platforms, especially Twitter, the blog has been well received.  Since the inception, my vision has continuously evolved and so has the blog.  This evolution, I would like to think, is a natural part of my continual improvement process.

Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals

Now back to why I am supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, also known as SDGs or global goals. The goals are designed to achieve a sustainable way of life for everyone.  They address issues such as poverty, hunger, pollution, inequality, climate change, gender equality, education and resource consumption etc.  Whilst we are aware of poverty and inequality around us, not everyone will recognise it well enough to make changes.

A Visit to the Local Supermarket

A few weeks ago, I visited the local supermarket.  Filling the trolley with items I knew my family would use, I headed to the checkout counter.   In front of me was a woman of a similar age to me.  I noticed that her trolley was filled with reduced breads, buns, jam and a few other items that were on offer.  She turned around and looked at my trolley, which I must admit made me feel a little uncomfortable.  She smiled and politely looked away.  It was at this moment, I became aware of the poverty and inequality around me.  It exists even in the West!  This one moment in time made me realise how lucky I was to be in a position where I can grab whatever I needed.

So later that day I kept thinking about this lady and her situation. It made me wonder what the reasons may be for someone in the West to be in such a situation. Was it because the cost of living was high, wages were too low, unemployment? Or were people simply making the wrong decisions? Several questions raced through my mind the entire time.

My SDG Moment on Twitter

That evening while I was scrolling through twitter, I noticed a tweet about the UN sustainable development goals.  I was aware of the SDGs, but I did not think about them in much depth, until that evening.  So I followed the link and I came across an array of information and initiatives taking place globally to make the world a better place.

The benefits of sustainable development need to be twofold, one where people benefit from this on a local level, and one where efforts are made on an international level. #SDGs #GlobalGoals Click To Tweet

I started to think about the goals and how I could make a difference, even if it was small.  I did not want to make just a global difference, I wanted to bring the change locally. At this moment, I realised that the benefits of the sustainable development goals need to be twofold.  One where people benefit on a local level and one where efforts are made on an international level.  So I took my key strength, environmental management and set up a blog.  I decided to incorporate the SDGs into the blog for small businesses to consider during decision making processes.

To Sum it Up

I would like to thank the woman who was in front of me that day.  Because of that one moment, I decided to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals in a way that I saw fit.

  1. This is such an interesting post! It’s weird how such a small thing can cause us to open our minds up to what is happening around us! Definitely need to go away and think about this more – thank you for sharing!
